I have chosen some of the scientific aspects regarding the mode of action of cupping as follows: Dr. Naseer Saleh has written that; Hijama=cupping is the process to extract nitrate toxicosis in humans which occurs through enterohepatic metabolism of nitrates to ammonia, with nitrite being an intermediate. Nitrites oxidize the iron atoms in hemoglobin from ferrous iron (Fe2+) to ferric iron (Fe3+). An Egyptian Physician Dr Sahbaa has written that Cupping exerts marked improvement on the clinical condition of patients especially visual analogue scale of pain, it significantly reduces the laboratory markers of disease activity and it modulates the immune cellular conditions particularly of innate immune response NK cell % and adaptive cellular immune response SIL-2R. Dr. Katase from Osaka University maintained that Hijama (cupping) influences the composition of blood as it increases red and white blood cells and changes acidic blood into alkaline or neutral blood, resulting in its purification. It also cleanses the body of accumulated irritants that cause inflammation. In the British Medical Journal Feb. 23, 1924 P; 352, Dr Robert J. What is really surprising is the fact that Hijama is one of the most famous medical prophetic recommendations. The Messenger Of Allah (Sallallaahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam) said: “Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease.” [Sunan Abi Dawud (3861)]. “Indeed in cupping (hijama) there is a cure.” [Muslim (5706)]. “The best treatment is Hijama; it removes blood, lightens the back and sharpens the eyesight.” (Tirmidhi, 3053) “Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach is best. In it is a cure and a blessing. It improves the intellect and the memory. [Sunan ibn Maajah (3487)] Oh Muhammad, order your Ummah (nation) with cupping (hijama).” [Saheeh Sunan Tirmidhee (3479)]. Jaabir ibn Abdullah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) was treated with cupping (hijama) on his hip for a pain in that area. [Sunan Abi Dawud (3863)] What is Cupping? Cupping Therapy can be divided into two broad categories: Dry Cupping and Wet Cupping. Dry Cupping involves application of suction cups by forming a vacuum on the body to gather deep tissue blood under it. Wet cupping uses the same technique, but adds small skin incisions and bloodletting. There are specific points on the body where the cups are applied for each ailment.

Traditionally, the ‘Cupping Therapy’ originated in Egypy and China thousands of years ago. The Arabic name for Cupping Therapy is Al-Hijama. The practice of Al-Hijama has been part of Middle-Eastern cultural practice for thousands of years with citations dating back to the time of Hippocrates (400 BC). Cupping is gaining publicity in the Western World and United States. Many medical schools in the U.S.A have begun teaching cupping as part of Complementary Medicine (CM). Bloodletting is also being practiced at Harvard Medical School and Johns Hopkins Medical Center, two of the most prestigious medical centers in the world.
